For National Preservation Month, we’re turning a spotlight on the Balch House! 🏡 Originally built as a dogtrot, this house was constructed in 1887. Balch once stood in the small community of Nebo, Alabama, at the current day intersection of Wall-Triana Highway and Capshaw Road in Madison, Alabama. In 1898, Samuel Williamson Balch added a half story, a frame kitchen, dining room, an office, and covered the roof with tin. The house was the center of a 160-acre farm, and was representative of the growing southern middle class. In the kitchen there is a c.1890 Glenwood wood burning stove made in Toutan, Massachusetts. The cost of this stove in 1900 was approximately $35.00. As you exit the house, be sure to look at the front of the house and remember that it started as a simple two-room dogtrot! (fb)
