When someone you care about is being hurt by their partner, it’s natural to want to jump in and help. But the most powerful thing you can do is show up with empathy, patience, and understanding. At Harbor House, we use the Listen, Support, Connect model to guide conversations in a way that prioritizes safety and empowerment. Listen Start by listening without judgment. Let them speak freely and at their own pace. It’s okay to not have the perfect words—just being present and saying things like “I’m here for you” or “Thank you for sharing this with me” can make a big impact. Support Believe them. Validate their feelings. Most importantly, remember that they are the expert in their own situation. Even if you don’t understand or agree with their choices, your role is not to judge—it’s to support. Say things like “You don’t deserve this” or “Whatever you decide, I’m here for you.” Connect When they’re ready, help them connect to resources. That could mean offering to sit with them while they call a hotline, helping them find a safe place to stay, or simply checking in regularly. You don’t have to have all the answers. Just showing up—consistently and without judgment—can be a lifeline. If you or someone you know needs help, Harbor House is here 24/7. Call our hotline at 815-932-5800 or chat with a staff member via our chatline at harborhousedv.org (fb)

Last week, one of our Shelter Supervisors and one of our Legal Advocates attended the Conference on Crimes Against Women in Dallas, Texas! This powerful conference brings together professionals from across the country who are committed to ending violence against women. Our team had the opportunity to learn from national experts, attend cutting-edge workshops, and connect with others doing this life-changing work. They even had a quick run-in with Lieutenant Mark Wynn (ret.), a nationally recognized expert who has previously partnered with Harbor House to lead impactful trainings right here in our community! The insights and tools gained at this conference will help us strengthen our services, improve our response, and continue building a safer, more supportive community for survivors. (fb)
