Friends of the South End

Friends of the South End (FOSE) is a nonprofit corporation, designated as a 501(c)(4) organization, dedicated to building community and preserving the unique character of the South End historic district in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It works to foster a cooperative, neighborly spirit and to protect and enhance the historic legacy of the area.

Mission and Activities

FOSE advocates for the interests of the South End neighborhood and contributes to the greater good of the city. It plays a significant role in organizing community events throughout the year, such as ice cream socials, lobster bakes, and neighborhood cleanup days. One of its signature events is the annual Fairy House Tour, which has been running for over two decades and attracts thousands of visitors to the South End.

Governance

The organization is governed by a Board of Directors that meets monthly. New board members are typically proposed and endorsed at the Annual General Meeting, though individuals are encouraged to join at any time during the year.

Role in the Community

The South End is renowned for its historic sites, including the Strawbery Banke Museum, the Wentworth-Gardner House, the Governor John Langdon House, the gardens of Prescott Park, and the recreational area on Peirce Island. FOSE partners with these sites to promote tourism and enhance community engagement. It also hosts events like the annual National Night Out on Peirce Island, fostering interaction between residents and local police and fire departments.

History

Established in the 1970s, FOSE has been instrumental in preserving the South End's historical character while actively contributing to its present and future development. The organization obtained its 501(c)(4) designation in 2012, solidifying its role as a community-driven entity focused on enhancing the quality of life in the South End.
