Trustees of the Masonic Hall and Asylum Fund
Overview
The Trustees of the Masonic Hall and Asylum Fund is a nonprofit organization designated under the category of Human Services—Multipurpose and Other / Senior Continuing Care Communities. Founded by an act of the New York State Legislature in April 1864, its primary purpose is to manage and protect assets of the New York State Masonic Fraternity. The organization's activities are focused on maintaining various facilities that support Masonic communities, including healthcare services and historical sites.
History
Originally established to build and maintain the Masonic Hall on West 23rd Street in New York City, the Trustees used revenue from these properties to support a home for Masons, their families, widows, and orphans. This initiative led to the creation of the Masonic Home in May 1893, which has since evolved into the Masonic Care Community.
Current Activities
Today, the Trustees are responsible for overseeing several key facilities:
- Masonic Care Community: A multilevel senior health care campus providing skilled nursing and other care services. It includes an independent retirement community and a child care center.
- Round Lake Camp: Located in Northern Oneida County, this camp hosts the Camp Turk Summer program for children aged 8 to 16.
- DeWint House/George Washington’s Headquarters: A historic site in Tappan, New York.
- Grand Lodge Building: The headquarters of the New York State Masonic Fraternity in New York City.
Governance
The Trustees of the Masonic Hall and Asylum Fund are volunteer board members. They ensure the management and operational efficiency of the facilities under their care. The organization's activities are governed by its tax-exempt status, and it operates within the framework set by the U.S. nonprofit sector.
Financial and Operational Structure
Donations to the organization are tax deductible. Compensation for key employees varies, with some receiving significant financial compensation for their roles while Trustees themselves serve without remuneration. The organization's financial management includes filing tax returns (Form 990) to report on its activities and governance.
