Los Angeles Indigenous People’s Alliance (LAIPA) is a grassroots organization founded in 1991. Inspired and supported by seasons social justice veterans, LAIPA began a journey of developing community based projects to support indigenous families from Mexico and Central America living in Los Angeles. Our mission is dedicated to the protection and continued development of Indigenous communities by promoting and organizing cultural education, health projects, economic and social justice programs in Los Angeles. Towards these goals, LAIPA is committed among the diverse peoples and organizations on the basis of the Universal Human Rights principle of One Continent-One People.

The Los Angeles Indigenous Peoples' Alliance (LAIPA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of indigenous peoples, particularly in the Los Angeles area. Established as a result of grassroots mobilization, LAIPA has been active for over 30 years, supporting community-based initiatives and advocating for indigenous rights.

Mission and Objectives

LAIPA's mission is rooted in the belief that reclaiming cultural identity is a crucial part of the healing process and an act of self-empowerment. The organization focuses on culturally appropriate, gender-responsive, and healing-informed strategies, especially within the RAZA populations in Los Angeles County. It aims to create healthy communities by fostering self-sufficiency, traditional practices, and human rights advocacy.

Activities and Achievements
  • Community Support: LAIPA has contributed to the development of community gardens and farming, promoting self-sufficiency and traditional food systems. It also coordinates community events that reintroduce indigenous health and medicinal practices, impacting families and seniors positively.
  • Advocacy and Policy: LAIPA was involved in international advocacy efforts, notably as a local affiliate of the International Indian Treaty Council. It participated in organizing the Peace and Dignity Journeys and supported the adoption of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007. In California, LAIPA co-created Assembly Bill 2695 in 2006, focusing on enhancing workplace safety.
  • Census Efforts: In 2000, LAIPA facilitated assistance centers for the U.S. Census to increase the count of indigenous people from Mexico and Central America.
Leadership and Structure

LAIPA's leadership is diverse, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and equity. The organization's board includes members such as Kelatztli Mendoza, Luis Pena, Adelina Mendez, Elena Anderson, and Armando Lawrence.
