Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is a global Catholic fraternal service order that provides charitable, educational, and financial support to its members and communities worldwide. Founded in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, it initially aimed to serve as a mutual benefit society for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States, offering insurance benefits and supporting families in need.

History

The Knights of Columbus was established at St. Mary's Parish in New Haven, Connecticut. Michael J. McGivney, an assistant pastor, organized the group to address the financial hardships faced by Catholic families when the main breadwinner died. The organization expanded beyond Connecticut and established its first international councils by 1905, fostering a sense of pride in both Catholic and American heritages among its members.

Mission and Activities

The core principles of the Knights of Columbus are Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. These values guide the organization's activities in support of Catholic causes, refugee relief, disaster aid, and various social causes. The Knights operate a large insurance company exclusively for members and their families, with over two million insurance contracts in force.

Charitable Initiatives

• Disaster Relief: The organization has a long history of providing aid during natural disasters, starting with a flood in Kansas in 1903. Recent efforts include significant support for victims of earthquakes, hurricanes, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

• Support for Refugees: The Knights of Columbus have been actively involved in supporting persecuted Christians and other refugees, particularly in the Middle East and along the U.S.–Mexico border.

• Health Initiatives: The organization supports health initiatives, including blood drives and providing ultrasound machines to pregnancy centers.

• Education and Scholarships: The Knights of Columbus offer scholarships for seminarians and other educational programs, promoting Catholic education and supporting young men pursuing the priesthood.

• Coats for Kids: This program donates winter coats to needy children, reaching over a million recipients as of 2023.

Structure and Membership

Membership is limited to practicing Catholic men. The order is structured into local councils, with over 17,000 worldwide, including more than 400 on college campuses. Women and youth can participate through affiliations like the Columbiettes and Columbian Squires.

The Knights of Columbus have a significant financial presence as a Fortune 1000 company, known for its highly rated insurance program. The organization continues to donate millions annually through various charitable efforts, enhanced by volunteer hours from its members. As of 2023, it reported over 2.1 million members globally.

The organization is led by its Supreme Knight, currently Patrick E. Kelly, and the Supreme Chaplain, William E. Lori. The Knights of Columbus continues to play an active role in promoting Catholic values in social and political arenas worldwide.
